In the event that there is any kind of emergency that causes the electricity to be out in the home or that makes it difficult to get to the grocery store to get food, you could benefit from making emergency food storage kits. These are simple kits that include non-perishable items that can give your family nutrients until you are able to cook once again or until you are able to get to the store.

Start planning your emergency supply now. Don’t wait until a few days before the weather channel is calling for severe weather or when everyone is out buying food at stores because you will likely not have anything in your kit. Start with a supply that will last for 3 days. Once you see what you have and what you need, then start getting items so that you have food for a week or longer. Make sure you get items that are in cans or boxes that don’t need to be heated. When you go on your weekly grocery trip, get a few extra cans of meat or fruit that you can add to your supply. If you do this each week, then you will find that you have plenty of food to satisfy the family during an emergency.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money getting emergency food supplies. Get items when they are on sale. You can also get bulk supplies by going to large supermarket warehouses. Get plastic totes to store your items, or build shelves in an area of the home where you know that you will go during an emergency. Think about the amount of storage space that you have. You don’t want to waste that space with items that you won’t use. Hide items under beds until they are needed, or keep them in a closet. This is also a time when you can get rid of the things that aren’t needed in the home so that you can make room for your emergency food supply. Stick to the basic items, but keep a few treats so that you aren’t eating the same thing the entire time.
