Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, co-wrote a book with Rabbi Abraham Skorka called “On Heaven and Earth: Pope Francis on Faith, Family and the Church in the 21st Century.”

This original Spanish version of the book, published in 2010, was entitled “Sobre el Cielo y la Terra,” and was intended to open up a dialogue on faith with the aid of Skorka, rector of the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary in Buenos Aires.

The new English translation is to be published by Image books who are also publishing the original Spanish version in the United States and Canada on 7th May.

The exchanges between Catholic and Jewish theological perspectives address subjects such as God, atheism, abortion, the Holocaust, same-sex marriage, fundamentalism and globalisation. It has been described as an effort by Francis to build on inter-faith relations.
Elected as leader of the Catholic Church and 1.2 billion Roman Catholics on the 13th March, the new Pope has taken his named from Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of animals.

“Pope Francis has published 11 books in his native Spanish. This English Translation will be a welcome addition to the world of religious literature and a fascinating insight into the perspectives and beliefs of the new Pope. It also demonstrates how translation services open up doors between cultures.
